BOPIS (Buy Online, Pick Up In Store)
An omnichannel fulfillment strategy where a customer places an order on an e-commerce storefront but picks up the physical item at a local brick-and-mortar store. Requires real-time inventory syncing between the POS and OMS.
Double-Entry Inventory Ledger
An accounting principle applied to inventory management. Instead of simply overwriting an inventory count (e.g., changing '10' to '9'), the system creates an immutable transaction that debits the warehouse and credits the order. This guarantees a mathematically perfect audit trail and prevents overselling.
Headless Commerce
An architectural pattern where the frontend storefront (the 'head') is completely decoupled from the backend commerce engine. They communicate exclusively via APIs. This allows brands to build lightning-fast custom UIs (using Next.js or React) without being constrained by legacy monolith templates.
Idempotent Processing
A property of API endpoints and webhook receivers where making the same request multiple times has the exact same effect as making it once. In retail tech, this ensures that if Shopify accidentally sends an 'Order Created' webhook twice, the OMS doesn't create duplicate orders.
OMS (Order Management System)
The central nervous system of a retail operation. It ingests orders from all channels (Amazon, Shopify, physical stores), allocates inventory from the correct warehouse, and routes the order for fulfillment.
PIM (Product Information Management)
A centralized system used to manage and distribute product data (titles, descriptions, SKUs, pricing, images) across multiple sales channels consistently.
Ship-from-Store
A fulfillment strategy where physical retail locations are treated as micro-fulfillment centers. Online orders are routed to the store closest to the customer, reducing shipping costs and transit times.
